Corinthian Pixis 20cm

Circa 600 B. C.

This vessel was used by the ancient Greeks to store valueables, i.e. jewellery, coins etc.
The animal frieze decorations were the distinctive trait of the Corinthian artists. The lion, the deer, the waterbirds were quite typical animal designs depicted on Corinthian pottery. The sphinx was introduced into Greek artwork through the Corinthians. The Corinthians were trading partners with the Egyptians and first saw the sphinx in Egypt. They gave it a female face and wings and introduced this mythical creature into their pottery designs.
