Product Description
SKYPHOS 20cm
Red figure circa 430 B.C.
‘Penelope & Telemachos’
The Skyphos was used by the ancient Greeks for the storeage of wine.
A scaled down reproduction of the antiquity attributed to the Penelope painter and housed in Chiusi’s, Museo Civico.
Depicted on one side is Penelope with her loom and her son Telemachos next to her and on the other side Odysseus being recognized by the palace maid (nurse) while washing his feet on his return as a begger, and the stable guard offering him some food.
On Odysseus’s return to his island Ithaca, after being away for 20 years with the Trojan war and his journeys, he transformed himself into a beggar so he would not be recognized. He wanted to see if his wife Penelope waited for him and still loved him after all this time.
