Product Description

AMPHORA 25cm

Black Figure circa 530 B.C.
‘Achilles & Ajax playing Pessous
and
The return of Kastor and Polydeukis’

The Amphora is a vessel used by the ancient Greeks to store grains and liquids.
This amphora is a scaled down reproduction of the antiquity made by Exekias and is housed in the Vatican museum in Rome.
Depicted on side A is Achilles and Ajax playing a game called pessous which involved pegs and dice. it was a game of strategy as is chess and backgammon today. This kept their minds active while they weren’t fighting.
Side B depicts Kastor and Polydeukis returning home to Sparta and being greeted by their parents Queen Leda and King Tyndareus with gifts. Kastor and Polydeukis were twin brothers and Argonaughts who were at sea for some time with other Argonaughts and of course Jason.
